Dedicated to Christian Saints
The flagship of the Bollandists’ hagiographical research is the journal Analecta Bollandiana. It is completed by two series of monographs, Subsidia hagiographica and Tabularium hagiographicum.
The journal Analecta Bollandiana was launched in 1882, initially as a complement to the Acta Sanctorum, but it soon acquired a life of its own.
Every issue contains both critical editions of hagiographical texts (Greek, Latin, Oriental…), and fundamental studies about hagiography. The articles are now published in modern international languages (English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish), each of them being provided with an English and a French summary. A large section of each issue is devoted to book reviews and bibliography.
Such contents make the Analecta Bollandiana indispensable in any department of medieval, Byzantine, Slavonic, or Christian oriental studies, as well as of Church history, comparative religions, ethnology, and folklore.
The series Subsidia hagiographica started a few years after the journal, as a vehicle for larger reference works. A complement to the Acta Sanctorum and the Analecta Bollandiana, the series comprises monographs, critical editions, and essential tools for research. These include the catalogues of hagiographical manuscripts of important libraries as well as methodological treatises. The three volumes of the Bibliotheca hagiographica (Graeca, Latina and Orientalis), listing Greek, Latin, and Oriental hagiographic texts up to 1500 A.D., are also part of the series.
The series Tabularium hagiographicum, born in 2002, is dedicated to publish the archives, mostly the correspondence, of the Bollandists and other scholars interested in hagiography.
